It is often said that the British are obsessed with weather. This could be because we have a lot of weather to be obsessed about! It seems like only yesterday that we were struggling with the worst winter in living memory; two feet of snow for weeks on end, and record low temperatures.

After what seemed like an eternity, spring eventually arrived, only to bring a new set of challenges for the gardener, as an exceptionally dry spell of weather then followed for the next five months. Whilst no-one would claim that we have had a ‘barbecue summer’, during this period there were record lows in rainfall levels, particularly in the Mansfield area. In conjunction with sandy soils that tend to dry out so quickly,  the result is that nearly all lawns are now suffering from drought stress. In addition, growth has been almost non-existent; at this time of the year, a healthy lawn should need mowing at least once a week, but the lack of growth generally means that at present there is little or no growth to mow. Another problem that is currently widespread is Dry Patch – a condition that causes the soil to become hydrophobic (water repellent) meaning that even when rain does eventually arrive, it cannot access the grass plant’s root zone, and runs off, or is evaporated away. Either way, the lawn gets no benefit from manual irrigation or even rainfall.
